What are charter schools and where did the concept for charter schools come from?

The School Projectexplores the history of charters and arguments both for and against them in its latest film, “UnChartered Territory: The Future of Charter Schools in Chicago.”

The film is the fifth installment of a six-part documentary Web series created by a collaboration of Chicago filmmakers.

“With this film we’re hoping to create a deeper discussion of the role charter schools play in the educational landscape,” segment director Bob Hercules said in a statement. “Is CPS opening more charters at the expense of neighborhood schools? Are charters becoming more privatized? Or are charters allowing greater innovation to flourish?”
