The Sun-Times is Chicago’s newspaper, and we’ve been working hard to go deeper into the city’s communities to bring you the stories that matter.
Earlier this year, we competed for, and won a grant from a national organization called Report for America to hire two talented reporters to beef up our coverage of the South and West Sides.
Manny Ramos and Carlos Ballesteros are now reporting on communities they know well. Carlos was raised in Brighton Park, Gage Park, Back of the Yards and Bridgeport. He worked at Newsweek before moving back to Chicago to work at the Sun-Times. Manny grew up in Austin, Humboldt Park and Cragin and worked for the non-profit City Bureau community journalism project before coming to the Sun-Times.
It is hard to say enough about their work. Whether it involved talking to barbers throughout the neighborhood after a horrific murder, or covering the positive impact the city’s dollar lot program, or looking at the possible rebirth of the historic Regal Theater, their stories benefit from a deep knowledge of the community and the kind of attention to facts that characterizes quality journalism.
That’s why we’re calling on everyone in the community who values this type of work to help fund it.
We need to support the communities that Manny and Carlos cover every day. A donation of any amount gets us closer to the goal. What do you say?
Grateful for your support,
CEO, Chicago Sun-Times
