Blackhawks will have their first-ever game broadcast in Spanish

For the winter months, the Blackhawks are the biggest story in town. With the Bulls floundering and the Bears in the midst of a rebuild, the city turns to the Blackhawks for a winner. Now, a few more city residents will be able to enjoy the team.

Earlier this week, the Blackhawks announced a new partnership with Univision for the first-ever Spanish-language radio broadcast.

From the team’s release:

The Chicago Blackhawks announced today a partnership with Univision Chicago, which features the organization’s first-ever Spanish-language radio broadcast on Univision America (WRTO AM 1200) on March 6 vs. the Detroit Red Wings at the United Center. Univision America (WRTO AM 1200) is Chicago’s only Spanish-language, full-service news/talk radio station. The game action will be called by Univision Radio sports commentators Hector Lozano and Omar Ramos, award-winning journalists who have decades of experience covering Chicago sports. Lozano and Ramos will bring behind-the-scenes broadcast stories, player interviews and more to bring fans closer than ever to the Blackhawks.

The new contract would give the Blackhawks exposure across Univision’s media group, including their TV and digital platforms.

In addition to the new media coverage, Blackhawks Charities and the Blackhawks Youth Hockey Department are partnering with El Valor to conduct hockey clinics throughout the year. According to the release, El Valor is “a non-profit community-based organization that reaches thousands of families throughout the Chicagoland area and strives for a community in which all members, including individuals with special needs, can live, learn and work.”

The Blackhawks aren’t the first team to have a Spanish-language broadcast. The Florida Panthers have had select games broadcast in Spanish-Language since 2014.

For now, there doesn’t appear to be any set plans for more Blackhawks games to be broadcast on Univision.
