Cubs sign Emilio Bonifacio to minor league deal

The Cubs signed veteran infielder Emilio Bonifacio to a minor league contract on Tuesday. Bonifacio could help the Cubs’ infield in September when the roster expands to the entire 40-man roster.

The veteran infielder was playing for the South Side earlier this season, but struggled at the plate. Bonifacio was hitting .167 with four RBI in 47 games this season with the White Sox.

After Bonifacio strained his oblique on Aug. 18, he was designated for assignment and subsequently released by the White Sox last week.

Bonifacio played with the Cubs in 2014 before being traded to the Atlanta Braves. In 69 games with the Cubs, the 30-year-old utility player hit .279 and a .318 on-base percentage.
