Fire pass on waiver draft

MLS held the waiver draft Wednesday, and the Fire passed despite holding the first pick. Colorado’s selection of former Seattle midfielder Micheal Azira was the only choice used.

Fire defenders Adailton and Daneil Cyrus were available to be chosen.

Wednesday, however, wasn’t the only chance the Fire have to improve.

The first phase of the re-entry draft is Friday afternoon, followed by the second stage next Thursday. The first offseason of free agency is in full swing, and clubs will be helped by the addition of $800,000 per team in transitional allocation money, and another $125,000 to sign Homegrown players.

Back on track?

The Wolves needed Tuesday’s 5-3 win over Iowa. They had lost five of six and save for an eight-goal outburst last Wednesday, were struggling to score. The Tuesday victory was the Wolves’ second game with more than two goals since a 5-3 loss on Nov. 18 to Milwaukee.

The Wolves play Friday and Saturday at Lake Erie before returning home Dec. 17.

Chalupny retires

The Red Stars announced Tuesday that captain Lori Chalupny is retiring from professional soccer. Chalupny was also a member of the U.S. national team that won this summer’s Women’s World Cup.

“She will always be a part of the Red Stars family and we wish her nothing but the best as she enters the next chapter of her life,” Red Stars coach Rory Dames said in a news release.
