Thousands of students nationwide stood in solidarity with the movement started at the University of Missouri Friday. In Evanston, hundreds of students interrupted the school’s ceremony for the groundbreaking of its new athletic facility.
The ceremony was reportedly interrupted as Northwestern athletic director Jim Phillips gave his speech. Phillips, however, was pleased that the students decided to stand up for something they felt strongly for. He commended them on their effort.
I’m proud of our students. It’s another example of freedom of speech and leadership. The students have a right to say what they want to say. I don’t have any issue. They were civil and unconfrontational. People should be proud of how Northwestern demonstrated itself in an unscripted format. Students have a right to say what they want to say. I don’t have any issue with [the protests].
According to SB Nation, The gathered demonstrators prepared a list of demands for Northwestern president Morton Schapiro. As president, many believe he is primarily responsible for creating a comfortable atmosphere for students of color at the university.
The protesters started their event at Northwestern’s African American student center, called the Black House, and marched north to the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion.
