View image | gettyimages.comThis weekend, the Northwestern Wildcats football team shocked the world with a dominating performance against Stanford. NU rode its defense to a 16-6 upset of the then-No. 21 ranked team in the country Saturday.

Northwestern not only dominated on the gridiron but also in the TV ratings. According to ESPN, the Northwestern-Stanford game was the most watched game of the opening weekend in college football.

Coming into the season, the Wildcats weren’t expected to do much in the Big10 after consecutive 5-7 seasons. While a win against a top-25 school is always a plus for a program, it isn’t new to the NU program.

Last year, NU beat two top-20 teams in Wisconsin and Notre Dame but still failed to qualify for a bowl game.

Northwestern takes on Eastern Illinois at home Sep. 12 for its next game.
