SHARE Report: White Sox agree to 3-year deal with OF Melky Cabrera

The White Sox have agreed to terms with free-agent outfielder Melky Cabrera on a three-year contract, according to a report from 670-AM late Saturday night.

It would be the latest in a flurry of big offseason moves for the Sox, who traded for starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija and signed free agent closer David Robertson on Monday. Last month, they signed first baseman/DH Adam La Roche and lefty reliever Zach Duke.

Left field was an area of need for the Sox, and the switch-hitting Cabrera, 30, is a proven bat who hit .301 for the Blue Jays in 2014. The Sox, who were approaching $100 million in payroll for next season, had said they were out of room, so the Cabrera agreement was somewhat unexpected. His arrival likely knocks incumbent Dayan Viciedo out of a job. The Sox have been shopping Viciedo since last summer and are reportedly close to a deal that would send the left fielder to the Seattle Mariners.
