White Sox announce deal with WGN Radio to broadcast games

GLENDALE, Ariz. — The White Sox have a new radio home, and it’s a familiar one to Chicago sports listeners: WGN-AM (720).

Scrambling in recent weeks to find new airwaves for the tandem of Ed Farmer and Darrin Jackson after Cumulus Media nullified long-term contracts with the Sox and Bulls on WLS-AM (890), the team landed at the longtime radio home of the Cubs.

The agreement, reportedly for three years, was jointly announced by the Sox and WGN. It includes all regular-season and postseason games as well as select spring-training games, starting with the Cactus League opener Feb. 23.

WGN was synonymous with the Cubs before ending a 56-year partnership in 2014, when the Cubs moved their broadcast to the Sox’ former home, the Score (670-AM).

“What an honor it is to join the White Sox family,” WGN Radio station manager and vice president of content Todd Manley said in a statement. “Summer starts TODAY on WGN Radio.’’

“It’s a fantastic win for White Sox fans,” Sox senior vice president of sales and marketing Brooks Boyer said. “We are thrilled to team up with an iconic media organization in Chicago, delivering the hustle and passion of White Sox games to WGN Radio listeners throughout the city and Midwest.”

The Sox and WGN Radio go way back. They broadcast on WGN from 1927 to 1943 with legendary voices Jack Brickhouse, Bob Elson and Quin Ryan calling games.
