Jimenez, Peter and Lopez get minor-league monthly honors

It’s early — way too early — but the initial return on the trade of Jose Quintana to the Cubs has looked good.

Class A Winston-Salem outfielder Eloy Jimenez, the No. 7 prospect in baseball, according to MLB.com, was named a co-player of the month for the White Sox for July, sharing the honor with Class AAA Charlotte infielder Jake Peter.

Jimenez, 20, batted .356/.415/.678 with four home runs, seven doubles and 14 RBI in 17 games in July with the Dash after being acquired with right-hander Dylan Cease and first baseman Matt Rose from the Cubs on July 13.

Peter, 24, a 2014 seventh-round pick, doesn’t have the same pedigree — he’s not ranked among the Sox’ top prospects — but he’s performing at a high level. He had a .364 average and .424 on-base percentage with 10 extra-base hits, including four home runs, and 13 RBI in 27 games between Charlotte and Class AA Birmingham in July. He put together an 18-game hitting streak.

The voting panel of Chicago media also named Reynaldo Lopez pitcher of the month. Lopez, 23, went 0-1 with a 2.10 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 30 innings and five starts. He’s expected to be called up to the Sox this month.

Aches and pains

Yoan Moncada (thigh) and Matt Davidson (right wrist) were out and said to be day-to-day, both of them possibilities to play Thursday in Boston, manager Rick Renteria said.

Moncada, who missed his second game after colliding in the outfield with Willy Garcia on Monday, was signed by the Red Sox and had 19 at-bats for them last season.

All-Star right fielder Avisail Garcia, on the 10-day disabled list since last Thursday, said he was having his sprained right thumb looked at by a team doctor Wednesday. Garcia will make the trip to Boston hoping to participate in light activity.

“We’re not going to rush it,’’ Renteria said.

Hello, Leury

Leury Garcia was one of the Sox’ top performers before their recent sell-off, so his return was more than welcome after he finally got over a sprained finger that kept him out of action for about a month and a half.

“I don’t know why it took so long,’’ Garcia said. “Swelling, swelling, swelling, but now it feels good.’’

Garcia was hurried back from a rehab assignment, which lasted one game for Charlotte, when Melky Cabrera was traded Sunday. He singled home the Sox’ first run against left-hander J.A. Happ in the sixth inning but is still finding his rhythm after being out so long. Jays right-hander Joe Biagini threw a waist-high fastball past him for strike three with two runners on in the eighth.

“I feel good,’’ he said. “Not like before I got hurt, but I feel good.’’

This and that

With Avisail Garcia and Davidson out, Renteria turned to catcher Kevan Smith to bat cleanup, and he responded with his second consecutive multihit game. Smith is 6-for-12 in his last four games.

† Tim Anderson tripled and had his first multihit game since July 18. He’s 7-for-41 in his last 11 games.
