White Sox reassign Scott Carroll and Brad Penny

The Chicago White Sox announced Thursday that they’ve reassigned pitchers Scott Carroll and Brad Penny to minor-league camp.

Carroll made 19 starts for the White Sox last season and two more this spring. Penny, who is attempting to revive his career with the White Sox, struggled in three starts this spring.

“It’s better for me to go out there so I can pitch every fifth day and get the innings,” Penny said. “Just take it one start at a time.”

The White Sox have 34 players remaining in major-league camp: 18 pitchers, three catchers, eight infielders and five outfielders.

The final roster decision will involve the bullpen, with seven of these eight making the Opening Day cut: David Robertson, Zach Putnam, Javy Guerra, Matt Albers, Kyle Drabek, Zach Duke, Dan Jennings and Maikel Cleto.

Cleto is the likely odd man out.

The club will set the roster when the team is in Charlotte on Friday.
