The AJ Reed experiment is over.

It ended with the waiver claim’s four strikeouts in four plate appearances in the White Sox’ 4-0 loss to the Mets on Thursday that dropped the Astros’ 2014 second-round pick’s average to .136. Reed had six hits, including a homer, in 44 at-bats.

Reed, who batted fourth in manager Rick Renteria’s lineup, was optioned to Class AAA Charlotte after the game. A corresponding move will be made before the Sox open a three-game interleague series Friday against the Phillies.

The Sox, who are fond of giving second chances to once-acclaimed but fallen prospects such as Reed, claimed him off waivers on July 8 and immediately inserted him in the lineup. Reed, a Golden Spikes winner in college who pitched and played first base at Kentucky, pitched a perfect inning of relief in the Sox’ 11-1 loss Sunday to the Twins.

Moncada to IL; Cordell recalled

Third baseman Yoan Moncada was officially put on the 10-day injured list with a strained right hamstring, and outfielder Ryan Cordell was recalled from Charlotte to fill Moncada’s roster spot. Cordell was optioned to Charlotte on Tuesday when shortstop Tim Anderson came off the injured list. Moncada is expected to be out about two weeks, general manager Rick Hahn said.

Leury, Leury good

Right fielder Leury Garcia threw out J.D. Davis, who was trying to advance from first to third in the fifth inning, for his major-league-best 11th assist. Garcia had a shot at his 12th, but catcher Welington Castillo couldn’t corral a short hop on his throw home attempting to get Robinson Cano.

Garcia also extended his hitting streak to eight games.

This and that

Eloy Jimenez snapped an 0-for-16 skid with a single in the seventh inning.

† Anderson picked up his first hit, a single, since coming off the injured list.

† The Sox are 1-10 in their last 11 games against teams with losing records.
