Candles adorned the doorstep to the now-closed Joyeria Angelo’s Monday in the 3800 block of West 26th Street in Little Village.
That’s where Faustino Alamo, 63, and his son, Luis Angel Alamo, 25, both of Berwyn, were gunned down Saturday night.
“They were hardworking people. It’s a tough time for the family right now. … They are a very close family,” said Jeronimo Alamo, a relative who works at another jewelry store about two blocks away.
According to Chicago police, the shooting occurred about 5:49 p.m. Saturday when a man with a gun parked across the street and then walked into the jewelry store. He grabbed some jewelry and ran out of the store. The Alamos ran after him.
They got into an altercation with the robber who then opened fire. Faustino Alamo fired off one or two shots with his own weapon, according to a police report.
The bodies of the father and son lay side by side along a curb as traffic continued to drive past, according to surveillance video posted by Telemundo Chicago.
Faustino Alamo was struck in his chest and left forearm. His son was shot in his chest and left leg, according to a police report.
Both men were pronounced dead less than an hour later at Mount Sinai Hospital.
When asked whether Faustino Alamo did the right thing in chasing the robber from the store, Jeronimo Alamo was reluctant to question his relative’s actions but said, “You work hard for what you have.”
Police said no arrests have been made. The shooter was last seen traveling south on Springfield Avenue in a white Maserati SUV.
A $10,000 reward is being offered through Cook County Crime Stoppers, and the family has started a GoFundMe to help with expenses.
