Autopsy: Man found in North Lawndale was beaten to death

A 39-year-old man found near his home Wednesday morning in the North Lawndale neighborhood on the Southwest Side was beaten to death, an autopsy Thursday revealed.

Shawndale Neal was discovered unresponsive about 7:30 a.m. in an alley in the 1500 block of South Lawndale, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Neal, who lived on the same block, was dead at the scene, authorities said.

Police initially said Neal had suffered a gunshot wound to the head, but the medical examiner’s office found that he died of blunt force head injuries he suffered during an assault. His death was ruled a homicide.

The circumstances of the incident were unknown Thursday afternoon.
