Cut spending on food stamps. Forget about those road construction projects as well. For former Vice President Dick Cheney, the government should be funneling its cash to one place — the military.
Cheney was speaking at a “playbook lunch” hosted by Politico. Cheney was joined by his wife, Lynne and daughter, Liz.
Cheney ripped Obama for having “dramatically reduced the military,” and also called cuts at the Pentagon “outrageous.”
He also made a call for the next president to rebuild the military.
“Turn around the whole trend with the United State military,” Cheney said. “That ought to be our top priority for spending. Not food stamps, not highways, or anything else. Your number one responsibility as president is to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. He’s the commander-in-chief and he’s absolutely devastating the United States military today.”
His comments about highway spending come at a time when transportation spending has also been reduced, causing some major issues.
For example, according to the White House:
- 65% of our roads are rated in less than good condition
- 25% of our bridges require significant repair or can’t handle today’s traffic
- 45% of Americans lack access to transit
Cheney also took some time to take a shot at Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), without mentioning him by name — but there was no question who he was talking about. Both Paul and Texas Gov. Rick Perry have been duking it out over foreign policy through their own op-ed pieces.
Cheney criticized Paul’s foreign policy views, saying “isolationism is crazy” and those who push it are “out to lunch.”
He also cited the Sept. 11 terrorists attacks and Iraq as examples of why we cannot stick “to the notion that we stay home and not get involved overseas.”
