The Cubs have claimed right-handed reliever Ryan Cook off waivers from the Red Sox.

The 28-year-old is 13-12 with 17 saves in 217 appearances over five seasons. In 207 innings of relief, he has 210 strikeouts and 89 walks.

From the Cubs:

The 6-foot-2, 217-pound Cook broke into the big leagues with Arizona in 2011 before being traded to Oakland that offseason. In his first full major league campaign, Cook made the 2012 American League All-Star Team and went 6-2 with 14 saves and a 2.09 ERA (17 ER/73.1 IP) in 71 outings with the Athletics. He followed up by going 6-4 with two saves and a 2.54 (19 ER/67.1 IP) in 71 appearances a year later. Cook was slowed by injuries in 2014 but still posted a 3.42 ERA (19 ER/50.0 IP) in 54 big league outings. Cook split most of the 2015 season between Oakland’s Triple-A Nashville and Boston’s Triple-A Pawtucket affiliates, combining to go 4-1 with nine saves and a 3.16 ERA (15 ER/42.2 IP) in 37 minor league outings. He made nine relief appearances in the majors between Oakland and Boston, going 0-2 with an 18.69 ERA (18 ER/8.2 IP).
