83-year-old man dies after Portage Park crash

An 83-year-old man died last week after he was involved in a crash in the Portage Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

William Reynen and a 78-year-old woman were in the backseat of a medical taxi about 12:05 p.m. on May 23 in the 4100 block of North Austin when the taxi was struck by another vehicle merging into oncoming traffic, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The driver of the vehicle that struck them, a 73-year-old man, had suffered a medical event and passed out.

Reynen, of the 5700 block of West Eddy, was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he died at 6:06 p.m. Tuesday, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. The 78-year-old woman was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center for treatment.

An autopsy found Reynen died of multiple blunt force injuries from the motor vehicle collision, according to the medical examiner’s office. Heart disease and obesity were listed as contributing factors. His death was ruled an accident.

The 73-year-old driver was also taken to Lutheran General, where his condition was stabilized, police said.

No charges or citations were filed in the crash.
