DCFS investigating death of Bellwood girl

State child welfare authorities are investigating the Saturday death of a 3-month-old west suburban Bellwood girl.

Yaiza Alvarez, who lived in the 4700 block of St. Charles Road in Bellwood, was pronounced dead at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge at 10:25 a.m. Saturday, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

An autopsy Monday was inconclusive pending further studies, the medical examiner’s office said.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is investigating Yaiza’s mother and father, as well as a boyfriend, for allegations of abuse and neglect, spokeswoman Veronica Resa said.

Resa said DCFS has had prior contact with Yaiza’s family. The girl has siblings, who have been placed with a relative under a DCFS-monitored safety plan.

Bellwood police could not be immediately reached for comment Monday morning.
