A 15-year-old girl who was fatally shot Tuesday night while sitting on a front porch in the South Side Englewood neighborhood has been identified.

Jazmyne Jeter was sitting with a group of teenagers about 8:30 p.m. in the 6900 block of South Carpenter when someone fired shots, striking her in the chest, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Jeter, who lived in South Chicago, was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was pronounced dead at 9:21, officials said.

It’s unclear whether she was the intended target of the attack, police said. The shots may have been fired from a nearby gangway.

Area South detectives were conducting a homicide investigation.
