A man and woman were shot Thursday morning on the Kennedy Expressway near the Avondale neighborhood on the Northwest Side, shutting down all inbound lanes for about three hours.

At 3:29 a.m., a shooting was reported on the I-90/94 by the Diversey Avenue exit, according to Illinois State Police. A 19-year-old man and 20-year-old woman were struck by gunfire and taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

The man was in serious condition with two gunshot wounds, while the woman was fair-to-serious with a gunshot wound to her leg, the fire department and state police said.

About 6:25 a.m., state police cleaned up the crime scene and reopened the expressway.

But for hours before that, city-bound morning commuters got on the southbound Kennedy to find only the express lane open, ISP said. Drivers were diverted off the Diversey exit ramp and back onto local lanes at the Fullerton Avenue entrance.

State police did not release details about the circumstances of the shooting Thursday morning. No one is in custody.

The incident remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call Illinois State Police at (847) 294-4400.
