The WNBA announced Friday afternoon that the league’s MTN DEW three-point contest will be added to the All-Star schedule next week in Las Vegas and two-time winner Allie Quigley headlines the list of players tapped to participate.
Jonquel Jones (Connecticut Sun), Jewell Loyd (Seattle Storm) and Sami Whitcomb (New York Liberty) join Quigley in the contest set to take place live on ESPN during halftime of the All-Star Game on July 14 at 6 p.m.
“I always try not to take it too serious,” Quigley said. “It’s a fun competition but at the same time, you want to win. There’s a lot of emotions involved.”
Ahead of the 2021 WNBA season, Quigley had a conversation with Sky coach and general manager James Wade about her role with the team. Quigley said she’s at a point in her career where she could acknowledge she is a better spark off the bench.
Quigley told Wade she was willing to lead the second unit and through the first 19 games of the season, her production has remained consistent. She’s averaging 11.8 points in 21 minutes of play for the Sky compared to her 15.4 points in 29 minutes as a starter last season.
Quigley has embraced the change and is the fourth leading scorer for the Sky through 19 games.
If there’s a better knock-down shooter from behind the arc, Wade said he hasn’t seen it.
“In the world [there’s no one better from three],” Wade said.
The order of competition will be determined by a random drawing. Each player will have 70 seconds to get through five racks of five balls. The first four racks will have four official WNBA game balls worth one point each and one money ball worth two points. The fifth rack will have all money balls.
Jones, Loyd and Whitcomb are all first-time participants. In her fourth three-point contest, Quigley will have her family in attendance as she shoots for her third title.
She is the fourth Sky player competing during 2021 WNBA All-Star joining her wife, three-time All-Star Courtney Vandersloot and teammates Candace Parker a six-time All-Star and first-time All-Star Kahleah Copper.
