The DOJ must use its authority to challenge discriminatory reforms immediately, before the election. The new obstacles must be exposed as the insult that they are, and used to motivate even more people to vote.
Senate Republicans invoking the cause of “states’ rights” united in a filibuster to block reforms. The question now is what can be done about it.
Dr. King would urge President Biden to push hard to overcome those who stand in the way of democracy reform and of economic decency. Yet he also understood that citizen movements are essential. It was Selma that moved the Voting Rights Act in Washington.
This is no time for petty politics. It is time for Congress to act to defend free elections and the right to vote before it is too late.
The many challenges we face will only be met by new generations bringing new energy, new ideas, new idealism and new movements to break through our partisan gridlock.
The teachings of Jesus are more important than ever now as COVID-19 threatens us all. It respects no boundaries. We can only defeat it together.
