Former Bears quarterback Doug Flutie announced on Facebook that both of his parents died Wednesday morning less than an hour apart due to apparent heart attacks.
Flutie said his father, Dick, had been ill and died earlier in the morning. His mother, Joan, died less than an hour later. Flutie’s parents had been married 56 years.
“They say you can die of a broken heart and I believe it,” Flutie wrote.
Flutie played with the Bears in 1986 but was traded to the Patriots in 1987. The college football legend played 21 seasons of professional football in the USFL, CFL and NFL before retiring in 2005.
