Bail was denied Saturday for a man charged with stealing an 85-year-old woman’s purse after allegedly shoving her to the ground earlier this week in Streeterville.
Tony Davis, 45, faces felony counts of robbery and aggravated battery of a person over 60, as well as a misdemeanor count of violating CTA rules of conduct, authorities said.
About 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, the woman was headed home after running an errand at the UPS Store and was walking in the 100 block of East Grand Avenue when she was approached from behind by Davis, who tried to pull off her purse, prosecutors said.
That caused the woman fell to the pavement and hit her head, knocking her unconscious, according to prosecutors.
The robbery was captured by area surveillance cameras.
The woman was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she was treated for a cut to the back of her head that required three staples to close, according to prosecutors. She remained hospitalized Saturday.
Detectives traced the moments before and after the attack using surveillance footage and Davis was taken into custody three days later when officers recognized him while responding to a call of a person sleeping at a bus shelter, prosecutors said.
Davis’ home was later searched and clothing that matched the attire of the offender seen on the surveillance footage was recovered, prosecutors said.
Davis was ordered held without bail and was expected to return to court Thursday, according to court records.
