CPS has released data on how many students are taking part in remote learning from home.

Tyler LaRiviere/Sun-Times

Chicago Public Schools released data this week on remote learning participation that found that fewer than 60% of all Chicago Public Schools students are engaging with online remote learning three or more days per week.

The report, which includes some of the most detailed metrics in the country, measured 294,000 students at district-run schools and focused on the week of May 11.

The data shows about 85% of students were successfully contacted by someone at their school at least once during that week, whether to check in for academic reasons or to offer social and emotional support. But more than 43,000 students, including a quarter of all high schoolers, weren’t reached that week. Since schools closed, 2,200 students haven’t been reached a single time.

On Friday, officials released more detailed data on individual schools throughout the district. The data for each school shows the percentage of students who were contacted at least once in a given week; how many students completed three or more assignments that week on a Google platform, which are used in the vast majority of CPS schools; and how many now have electronic devices and internet access.

Here are more detailed definitions of the data, according to CPS:

Student Contact: Schools tracked if they were able to make contact with a student at least once a week through either digital learning, office hours, academic support, or social and emotional check-ins. Through the district’s remote learning plan, schools are required to make contact with all students at least once per week. Student contact is based on school-reported data and schools have been tracking contact data on their own throughout the closure. The district did not require they centrally submit contact data until the week of May 18 and moving forward, the district is requesting principals centrally submit data to the district through the remainder of the school year. Not all schools have submitted data for every student.

Digital Access: Students are considered to have “digital access” based on Google analytic data and school-reported data. Schools were asked to record students as either digital learners (based on whether they have a device and Internet access), non-digital learners, or students schools were unable to contact. Missing data indicated the school did not submit information for a specific student and the student did not appear in Google analytic data. This tab also includes devices distributed to students, as recorded by schools in TipWeb as of May 28, 2020.

Google Platform Engagement: Student activity is logged automatically when a student joins a Google Meet or logs in to Google Classroom using CPS login credentials. Engagement represents the number of students who have engaged in either Google Meet or Google Classroom 3 or more times during the specified week. While not all schools use Google, the vast majority do.
