A 74-year-old man was killed in a fire at his home early Sunday in north suburban Northbrook.

Firefighters responded to a house fire in the 1300 block of Edgewood Lane at 1:14 a.m., according to Northbrook Fire Chief Jose Torres. The single-family ranch home was “heavily involved in fire.”

Lawrence B. Costello, who lived in the home, was found dead during a search by firefighters, according to Torres and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

His wife was able to escape the blaze, Torres said. A pet cat also succumbed to the fire.

An autopsy Monday found Costello died of heart disease, with burn injuries listed as a secondary cause. His death was ruled an accident.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but was not thought to be suspicious, Torres said. No firefighters were hurt.

“We’re treating it as more of an accidental fire,” he said.

The home was left uninhabitable.
