The driver of a car that slammed into a median wall on Interstate 294 was seriously injured Saturday evening in the south suburbs.

The crash happened shortly before 7 p.m. near mile marker 0.3 on northbound I-294 in unincorporated Thornton Township, according to Illinois State Police.

A Chevy Cobalt was speeding in the far right lane when it veered across all the lanes into the left concrete median, state police said.

The driver was ejected from the car and taken in serious condition to Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, police said.

No other vehicles were involved and no other injuries were reported.

The far left lane was blocked to traffic until about 8:15 p.m. as crews cleared the scene. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
