As political fight brews, Redskins hire lobbyist

As a political fight brews over its team name, the Washington Redskins have hired a lobbying firm, Politico reports.

According to newly-filed lobbying disclosures, McGuireWoods Consulting was hired in May, just a week after half of the U.S. Senate sent a letter to the NFL asking for the league to follow the NBA’s lead and rid his league of bigotry and racism.

The NFL responded, by saying the Redskins name is “positive and respectful.”

And then nearly two weeks ago, the Redskins tried to go after Senate Majority Leader Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) using #RedskinsPride on Twitter. They wanted fans to tell Reid what the team name means to them. As you’d expect, it didn’t go as planned for the Redskins.

The lobbying disclosure states that McGuireWoods will focus on “discussions of team origins, history and traditions, Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation and youth sports, activities of Original Americans’ Foundation.”
