Cop shot himself in ankle during foot chase

A Chicago Police officer shot himself in the ankle during a foot pursuit Friday morning in the West Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side.

The officer was chasing a suspect near Lake and Kostner about 9:55 a.m. when his gun accidentally discharged as he was trying to re-holster it, police said.

He was taken to Rush University Medical Center, where his condition had stabilized, police said.

The person the officer had been chasing was taken into custody a short time later, although it was not immediately clear why the person was wanted, police said.
