(MAYWOOD) A West Side man was shot to death by police in west suburban Maywood after officers allegedly witnessed a drug deal early Saturday.

Officers on patrol at 2:11 a.m. in the 2000 block of 13th Avenue saw what appeared to be a drug transaction, according to a statement from the Maywood Police Department.

As the officers approached to question the people involved, 29-year-old Craig Hall ran away and the officers began to chase him, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

During the pursuit, Hall reached for a gun in his waistband, at which point the officers shot him, authorities said.

Hall, of the 4900 block of West West End Avenue, was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he was pronounced dead at 2:41 a.m., the medical examiner’s office said. Hall died of multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide, the medical examiner’s office said.
