For Grayslake North High School’s boys soccer team, there really is no place like home.
The Knights followed up a 3-1 win over Northside Prep of Chicago in the semifinals with a dominating 6-2 triumph over Johnsburg on Saturday to win their own Class 2A regional.
Grayslake (13-8-2) will play Marian Central of Woodstock at 6:30 Wednesday night on the football field at Grayslake Central High in the sectional semifinals. The teams did not face each other this fall.
In Saturday’s rout, Johnsburg led 1-0 early, but Grayslake poured in four first-half goals — Sean Dameron from Denzel Mitchem, Jason Rhodes from Grant Nickolson, Lucas Buckels from Mitchem, and Kyle Hensley from Buckels — to take a 4-2 lead at the break.
Second-half tallies from Chris Zamora and Rhodes sealed the deal.
Libertyville 1, Mundelein 0: Kevin Reilly’s early goal held up as the Wildcats won a Class 3A regional. Second-seeded in the Palatine Sectional,
Libertyville (14-3-0) will face second-seeded Palatine on Tuesday at 6:30. Buffalo Grove will play Highland Park in the other semifinal. The Bison took out favored Warren in the regional semifinals and is the defending sectional champion.
