Man seriously hurt in shooting along Safe Passage Route on West Side

A man was seriously injured in a shooting Wednesday afternoon along a Safe Passage Route in the North Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side.

The 34-year-old man was shot in the back about 3 p.m. in the 3600 block of West 16th Street, police said.

He was taken in serious condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said.

The block where the shooting happened lies on a Safe Passage route for Johnson School of Excellence, 1420 S. Albany Ave., according to the Chicago Public Schools website. The scene of the shooting is about three blocks from the school.
