More ‘Fargo,’ ‘Louie’ headed to FX network

Aw, how nice (but not exactly a surprise): FX announced Monday that it’s moving forward with a second season of its Emmy-nominated, small town mystery series, “Fargo.”

The next chapter in this offbeat anthology will be set in 1979, feature an all-new cast of characters (or much younger versions of those who do return) and a new “true crime” story, a la another FX hit, “American Horror Story.” Ten episodes will make up the new season, slated to debut in fall of 2015.

“We could not to more proud of ‘Fargo,’” FX Networks head John Landgraf told TV critics at their summer press tour in Beverly Hills. “Noah’s [Hawley] audacious, bordering on huberistic riff on my favorite Coen brothers’ film earned 18 Emmy nominations — the most for a single program in our history.”

“Fargo” put newcomer and Chicago comic Allison Tolman on the map for her portrayal of salt-of-the-earth cop Molly Solverson — a role that won her an Emmy nod. It also starred Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Freeman, Colin Hanks and Naperville native Bob Odenkirk.

The cable network also announced it has picked up another of its Emmy darlings, Louis CK’s singular comedy series, “Louie,” for a fifth season. The shorter-than-usual new season — seven episodes — will premiere in spring 2015.
