THREE THINGS WE KNOW
No. 1. Shepard cares about ALS. The Astros partnered with Evergreen Park on May 1 to raise money for Susan Michalik, who is battling ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease). The game, which the Astros won in five innings, raised $12,500. Susan is the mom of Shepard third baseman Gracie Michalik.
No. 2. Alex Nickel is on a tear. The Marian Catholic player has a hit in 17 of her last 28 at-bats to go along with 13 runs scored, four doubles, five home runs and two stolen bases. One of her homers beat Oak Forest, and she hit three during a 7-5 loss to Lockport while going 4-for-4. During one stretch she had four home runs in six at-bats. Nickel is batting.513 with six home runs, 13 doubles and 27 RBI.
No. 3. Amanda Wilson can hit too. Wilson, a Providence senior, is known more for her pitching, but is a pretty good hitter. The Florida Atlantic-bound lefty recorded her 88th career RBI in a win over Joliet Catholic to break the Celtics’ program mark. She has 91 career RBI to date. She defeated Marist on April 26 to earn her 50th win.
