Those Warren Devils were truly something special

I was rather proud of myself. It was naturally very early in my writing career but I picked Antioch to edge Warren 14-13 in the second week of the season. And it was almost perfect as the Sequoits beat Warren 13-12.

The Warren football team was 1-1. The year was 1991. Little did I know at the time, but after that loss, coach Reggie Hughes and his pals made some serious changes. Warren would no longer run the football. QB Craig Shelton would simply sit back and fire strikes. This team won 9 games in a row. They blew teams out. I can recall writing during one stretch that Shelton completed 5 straight passes to 5 different receivers. They don’t do that in the NFL. It was incredible.

In the third round of the playoffs, I drove up to Rockford Boylan. At halftime, Shelton was hammering the No. 2 team in the state, 24-7. Warren lost that game in the second half.

Why all the memories? Warren hosts Antioch on Friday night. And the school is bringing back players from that special 91 team to celebrate that great season. Heck, it was only 18 years ago. Why those players must be pushing 40 by now.
