I read where Schaumburg’s Mark Iannoti recently made a verbal commitment to Eastern Michigan to play quarterback. He soon will join his older brother Anthony, a quarterback for Division III Wisconsin-Whitewater, as a college QB.
I watched both of them play in high school. Although the Saxons aren’t a traditional football power by any stretch of the imagination, both Iannotis found ways to win during their senior seasons.
Anthony’s highlight was leading Schaumburg to the quarterfinals in 2008. Mark got the Saxons to the second round before they lost to Simeon 55-50. He ran for 248 yards in the loss. For the season, according to the Daily Herald, he passed for more than 1,000 yards and ran for more than a 1,000 yards, an accomplishment not reached by many quarterbacks on any level.
Mark’s biggest win, of course, was in Week 1 when the Saxons beat Maine South 29-17. The Hawks, who lost the next week, rallied to win 12 in a row for their third state championship.
Mark can always say he beat a state champion. He better not talk too much when he arrives on campus, though. Former Maine South quarterback Tyler Benz is at Eastern Michigan. Benz helped the Hawks to the state title in 2009.
