Crystal Lake South ran the ball at will and made huge stops on defense to register a 36-22 Fox Valley Valley Division win over visiting Dundee-Crown on Friday night at Ken Bruhn Field.

The Chargers (3-4, 1-3) got off to a quick start thanks to running back Cody Lane. The Dundee-Crown junior ran the ball for 177 yards on 13 carries including touchdown runs of 60 and 63 yards. The momentum wouldn’t last long though.

Thanks to some defensive adjustments by the Gators (4-3, 3-2), Lane was held to just 33 yards in the second half.

Crystal Lake South coach Chuck Ahsmann was pleased with his team’s effort in a huge game for both teams.

“Cody Lane is such a tough running back,” said Ahsmann. “Once we were able to get him in check the game really turned in our favor.”

Gators running back Zevin Clark was key in Crystal Lake South’s victory. The senior had 203 yards on 26 carries.

“Tonight’s game felt like a playoff game,” said Clark. “We made plays when we needed to and stopped them when we needed to. The offensive line played so great and gave me a lot of lanes to run through.”

It was a huge swing game for Crystal Lake South.

“Our postseason pretty much has already started,” said Ahsmann. “We need to play one week at a time if we want to get to the playoffs. We survived tonight and now will get ready to play a good Jacobs team.”

Dundee-Crown coach Vito Andriola isn’t happy with how his team has played the past few weeks.

“Tonight was another example of how our program isn’t where it needs to be yet,” said Andriola. “There were times in this game that we looked like we did last year. We really need to start playing better mentally.”
