Undefeated Team = Giant Target

Read where the Cary-Grove girls volleyball team won its 50th game in a row by beating rival Crystal Lake South to improve to 34-0 on the season.

With the playoffs starting next week, it’s appropriate to highlight the obvious big red flag an undefeated team waves at the state tournament.

The Maine South boys found out just how hard it is to fend off every challenger earlier this year. The Hawks came into the state tournament 39-0 and the prohibitive favorite to win their second state championship.

After beating Buffalo Grove in straight sets, Maine South lost its title bid with a three-set loss to Marist in the semifinals. The Hawks came back to finish third overall.

Now, the Trojans, if possible, are an even bigger target after winning the state title last season. I used to cover Cary-Grove back in the day (I don’t miss the nearly 100-mile commute from Chicago), and I know Patty Langanis is a great coach who will have her talented team ready to go each time. Trouble is, EVERY single team the Trojans play will be playing as if the match is the state championship.

Should be fun to watch.
