Stars come out

Five local football standouts, including Sun-Times Player of the Year Laquon Treadwell of Crete-Monee, are spending this week in warmer climates as they prepare for national all-star games on Friday. Treadwell is one of four Chicago-area players in south Florida for the Under Armour All-America Game at Tropicana Field in Tampa. Also set to participate in that game — set for 4 p.m. on ESPN — are Joliet Catholic running back Ty Isaac, the 2011 Sun-Times Player of the Year and a USC recruit; Lemont offensive lineman Ethan Pocic (Louisiana State) and Lincoln-Way West offensive lineman Colin McGovern (Notre Dame). Maine South quarterback Matt Alviti (Northwestern) will play in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl at Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. That game also is set for 4 p.m. and will be on the NFL Network.

Stating their case

The IHSA has approved plans to expand its state series for athletes with disabilities to boys swimming and wheelchair bowling. The program was supposed to begin with cross country but there were no entries, so it got under way with girls swimming with seven competitors in four events. The plan is to add competition in boys and girls track and field in the spring, assuming there’s enough interest.
