My first state champion

As a sportswriter, you get to cover winning teams and losing teams. And if you are lucky, sometimes, an individual will make something happen in swimming, track, golf or bowling. This weekend in Carbondale, Lake Forest’s Hailey Koschmann set state records with her 9-stroke victory in the girls IHSA state golf tournament. She shot scores of 66 and 69. I joked with her that she will not only be the Pioneer Press Lake Shore girls golfer of the year but the boys as well. Actaully, I do have a candidate for that one. As in a storybook, Koschmann finished third as sophomore, second as a junior and first as senior.

I’ll patiently wait for her four years of golf at Illinois end and then I’ll call her and invite her out for a round of Pioneer Press Foursome golf. That is before she turns pro.
