Is volleyball too easy to play?

One factor over the IHSA’s decision to go with doubleheaders in the playoffs that coaches refuse to admit is perhaps how easy it is to play in a volleyball match. One coach I interviewed tried to remind me of the demands of the sport: “Jumping, jumping and jumping.” But since the sport went to rally scoring, a match can be over in 30 minutes and rarely lasts longer than one hour. High school teams easily play five matches on a Saturday afternoon. The coaches argue that the IHSA will not go to doubleheaders during basketball season. Although that hasn’t been decided, it does seem hard to believe that doubleheaders will occur during the basketball playoffs when games last at least 90 minutes. But the bottom line is that volleyball is much better off with rally scoring. Actually, I wonder, how did we go so long with sideout scoring?
