(ELGIN) A boy fatally struck by a vehicle Wednesday evening on a busy northwest road has been identified as a 12-year-old from Elgin.

Gerardo Simental was running across lanes of traffic about 6:15 p.m. near Route 20 and McLean Boulevard in Elgin when a vehicle heading eastbound on Route 20 struck him, according to Elgin police and Kane County coroner’s office.

Simental was taken to Presence St. Joseph Hospital where he later died, according to police. No one else was injured.

The crash remains under investigation, and no citations had been issued as of Thursday afternoon.
