In August, the fifth-graders in Linsey Rose’s class at Bradwell School of Excellence wrote a letter to the Chicago Tribune defending their South Shore neighborhood.
The students wanted to sound off on the idea that violence has transformed Chicago into Chiraq, the oft-used term that oversimplifies and under-represents the realities of Chicago. Here are their thoughts in their own words:
