Police: Man ran away, ditched handgun after traffic stop

(KANKAKEE) A southwest suburban man was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly tried to run away from police and discard a handgun in Kankakee.

Jonathon M. Jones, 19, was stopped by police about 1:05 p.m. in the 400 block of South Osborn in Kankakee for a traffic violation, according to a statement from Illinois State Police.

Following the stop, Jones ran away from the vehicle and attempted to discard a .380 caliber semi-automatic handgun, police said.

Jones, of the 500 block of South Wildwood in Kankakee, was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a weapon by a gang member, no FOID card, resisting arrest, obstructing police and unlawful possession of cannabis, police said.

He was also issued a traffic citation for failure to signal when required, according to police.
