A three-year-old boy is in critical condition after he was struck by a car Wednesday afternoon in the South Side Park Manor neighborhood.

The boy was holding a relative’s hand at 71st and Wabash when he broke free and ran into traffic at 1:46 p.m., police News Affairs Officer Nicole Trainor said.

He was struck by a car and taken in critical condition to Comer Children’s Hospital, Trainor said.

The driver stopped after the crash and was cited for due care to avoid colliding with a pedestrian in the roadway.

The police Major Accidents Investigation Unit is handling the case.
