A new version of the Chicago Sting could be moving closer to reality.
Multiple reports last week said a group is trying to bring the Sting back to the North American Soccer League, which is the second tier of American soccer, in time for the 2017 season. According to one report Peter Wilt, the former Fire president and general manager, is working as an unpaid consultant for Club 9 Sports, the group trying to create the new club.
Wilt currently serves as president of the NASL’s Indy Eleven.
The original Sting played outdoors from 1975-1984 and won two NASL titles. They also played indoors starting in 1976 before ending their run in 1988.
Polsterized
Fire midfielder Matt Polster on Tuesday was named one of the three finalists for MLS rookie of the year. Picked seventh overall, Polster was one of the Fire’s few pleasant surprises, starting 27 games and making his presence felt with his strong and aggressive play in the middle of the field.
The other finalists are Orlando City’s Cyle Larin and Fatai Alashe of San Jose. The winner will be announced Nov. 10.
A new leader
The WNBA announced Wednesday that president Laurel J. Richie is leaving the league, effective Nov. 9. Richie joined the WNBA in May 2011, and according to a news release is departing to pursue other interests.
Mark Tatum, the NBA’s deputy commissioner, will run the league on an interim basis.
Another chance
Before their game against the Blackhawks, the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday recalled forward Magnus Paajarvi from the Wolves. Once an elite prospect, Paajarvi has struggled to make an impact in the NHL but has been one of the Wolves’ best players since arriving last season.
In 43 games for the Wolves, Paajarvi has 15 goals and 21 assists.
