Shedd Aquarium adopts its latest puppy, a 10-month-old dachshund/terrier

The Shedd Aquarium has added to its wide array of animals, this time adopting a 10-month-old dachshund/terrier mix puppy named Peach.

Peach was originally rescued from a shelter in the southern United States after being found tied to a Dumpster, then was brought to the Anti-Cruelty Society in Chicago, according to a statement from the Shedd announcing her adoption. The shelter contacted the Shedd to see if Peach would be a good fit for its rescue program.

Peach has large scars on her back, which may be from sun exposure or burns from the hot Dumpster she was tied to, according to the Shedd. She enjoys playing with toys in the aquarium’s dog lounge and has already learned to sit and walk on a leash.

“Through positive reinforcement, the aquarium’s trainers will work with Peach and provide constant care for the pup,” according to the statement. She may later participate in the Shedd’s “One World” presentations, which focus on the connection between humans and animals.

Peach joins three other rescue dogs that live at the Shedd, including Dory, a female shepherd mix; Marlin, a male Labrador mix; and Kobe, a 3-year-old male Dogo Argentino mix. All the Shedd’s dogs are named after characters from the movie, “Finding Nemo.”

Since 2013, the Shedd had adopted six dogs from area shelters. Two of the dogs have been adopted into homes after staying at the aquarium.
