Bears waive QB David Fales

David Fales, Phil Emery’s sixth-round pick from his final season as GM, was waived by the Bears on Tuesday.

The former San Jose State quarterback never took a regular-season snap with the team, but was promoted from the practice squad toward the end of last season when other teams showed interest in him.

He opened training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list because of an illness, and stayed there for almost all the Bears’ stint in Bourbonnais. He declined to give specifics about the malady, calling it “nothing too serious, but a little scare before camp.”

Fales made the Bears’ roster by playing well in the team’s final preseason game. He started and completed 14-of-18 passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns, warding off Zac Dysert, who had been claimed earlier in the week. Dysert was cut two days later, leaving Fales as the third-stringer behind Jimmy Clausen and Jay Cutler.

Fales could end up returning to the Bears as a practice squad member. The team seems likely to promote a practice-squad defensive lineman this week to make up for the loss of Cornelius Washington, who was put on Injured Reserve on Monday.
