Man wounded in Tuesday shooting near Evanston high school dies

Sun-Times file

A man critically wounded in a shooting near a north suburban high school on Tuesday evening died Friday afternoon from a gunshot wound to the head, an autopsy reveals.

About 5:22 p.m. Tuesday, the 45-year-old victim and another person were in the rear of a home in the 1900 block of Emerson in Evanston when four males walked up and opened fire before running off, according to a statement from Evanston police.

The 45-year-old, identified as Cesario Cox Sr. of the 1000 block of McDaniel Avenue in Evanston, was shot once in the head and taken to Evanston Hospital, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He died there Friday afternoon from the gunshot wound.

An autopsy Saturday found he died of a gunshot wound to the head, and his death was ruled a homicide, the medical examiner’s office said.

Nearby Evanston Township High School was locked down as a precaution, police said. No students were injured or involved.

Evanston police and the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force are investigating.

Anyone with information on the shooting should call police at (847) 866-5000 or send an anonymous text message to CRIMES (274637) and type EPDTIP in the message line.
