A man was seriously hurt early Wednesday when he fell at least 50 feet off a balcony downtown.

About 1:50 a.m., the 27-year-old was wearing a backpack while sitting or leaning on a balcony railing in the 200 block of North Westshore Drive, according to Chicago Police.

The weight of his backpack caused the man to lose his balance and he fell between 50 and 60 feet, police said. He was taken in serious condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
